HELP!! With the History of St Georges, Hyde's Handbells
I'm looking for anyone who knows the past history of St. George's Church
Hyde's handbells. These are over 150 years old and were in storage, in a
delapidated state, in the Church. They were then rescued by the Tint'stle
Ringers who bought them from two gentlemen who met them in Church in 1985.
The story has it that they had been found under the stairs at Hydes Lads
Club when it was demolished and taken to St. George's for storage. They are
however older than the Lad's Club and someone remembers that the boxes had
St. George's Church written on them. So, they had probably made at an
individual's or business's expense for use at at St. George's and at some
time been used at the Lad's Club too.
The people who sold them had played them in the thirties and they were
definitely still at St. George's in the sixties.
Thank goodness for the Tint'stle ringer who have had them recast in the
original Whitechapel moulds. The ninety bells in total can be seen and
heard at St George's Open day on Saturday the 13th of September
